CNIC for Married Women in Pakistan (2026 Guide)

NADRA

Last Updated: August 2026

You are not required to take your husband’s name on your CNIC. You never were. The practice that made it feel compulsory was an internal habit at NADRA rather than a law, and NADRA formally ended it in October 2021. Its current guidance is that a woman “may voluntarily choose to retain her father’s or husband’s name on the CNIC”. What does carry a hard requirement is something different: changing your marital status to “Married” needs a marriage certificate, and NADRA is specific about who has to have issued it.

Three separate changes that get treated as one

Almost every problem in this process comes from bundling three independent decisions into a single trip to the registration centre. They have different rules, different documents, and you can do any one of them without the others.

ChangeIs it required? What NADRA asks for
The name printed on your cardNo. Entirely your choiceNothing, unless you choose to change it
Marital status set to “Married”Only if you want it updatedMarriage certificate from a Union Council, Cantonment Board or CDA
Your husband recorded in your family recordSeparate processHandled through the family registration route

The third of those has its own guide, adding your spouse to NADRA records. This page covers the first two.

You do not have to take your husband’s name

NADRA’s own FAQ answers this in one word. Asked whether a woman can retain her father’s name after marriage instead of adopting her husband’s, it replies: “Yes. As per prevailing policy, a woman may voluntarily choose to retain her father’s or husband’s name on the CNIC.”

That wording matters, because for decades the counter experience said otherwise. The change was announced on 17 October 2021 by Tariq Malik, then chairperson of NADRA, at the 14th Annual Rural Women Conference in Islamabad. His description of what was actually being removed is worth reading in full, because it is more pointed than the summaries of it:

“We are breaking down this policy and women now have the authority to register themselves with their father’s or husband’s name. It’s their choice and not of a man’s.”

He was explicit that the old requirement had no legal basis at all. It was, in his words, an “unofficial policy” created by the people implementing policy, and “it was no law that made it compulsory for women to take their husband’s name or seek permission from the husband for updating their name”.

So if you have been told at a counter, by a relative, or by a guide online that this is a step you must complete after marriage, that is not NADRA’s position and has not been since 2021.

Your three options

  • Keep your father’s name. No application, no fee, nothing to do. Your card stays as it is.
  • Replace it with your husband’s name. A modification application, priced below.
  • Add your husband’s name while keeping your father’s. NADRA’s 2021 announcement named this explicitly as a third option, not a compromise it grudgingly allows.

Nothing about the second or third option is more correct than the first. Consider practical friction rather than convention: if your degrees, bank accounts, property papers and passport all carry your father’s name, changing the CNIC creates a mismatch you will spend years reconciling. If they already carry your husband’s name, the opposite is true. The document trail you already own is the better guide than anyone’s expectation.

The one-time rule, and why it does not bind you

This is worth knowing before you decide, and it is missing from every guide we checked. NADRA’s Registration Policy puts a one-time limit on name changes: an applicant “can neither revert to their previous name nor can change name for 2nd time”. For most people, a name change is a one-way door.

The rule carries exactly one stated exception, and this is it: “except for female applicant (modified name with husband/father)”. A woman moving between her husband’s name and her father’s name sits outside the one-time limit. If you take your husband’s name now and want to return to your father’s name later, or the reverse, the policy allows it where it would not for anyone else. Our guide to changing your name on a CNIC covers the general rule and the documents in full.

Updating your marital status

This is the part with a genuine requirement, and NADRA states it without any softening. Asked whether marital status can be changed without a marriage certificate, its answer is no: “A marriage certificate issued by Union Council, Cantonment Board or CDA, is a mandatory requirement to update marital status to ‘Married’.”

Read the issuing authorities in that sentence carefully, because this is the single most common reason people are turned away. NADRA names three bodies: a Union Council, a Cantonment Board, or the CDA. A nikah nama is not on that list. The nikah nama is the marriage contract; the marriage certificate is the registered civil record one of those authorities issues afterwards. If your nikah was never registered with a Union Council, you do not yet have the document NADRA is asking for, and registering it is the step that has to come first.

One addition that NADRA’s FAQ leaves out. Its Registration Policy lists the accepted document as a marriage certificate from a Union Council, Municipal Committee or Cantonment, or a foreign marriage certificate. So if you married abroad, your foreign certificate is accepted on its own terms and the marriage does not have to be re-registered in Pakistan first.

Several widely read guides list “nikah nama and husband’s CNIC” as the required documents here. That is not what NADRA’s own answer says, and following it means arriving at the counter with the wrong paper.

If you do decide to change the name

NADRA treats this as an ordinary name change rather than a marriage-specific procedure, and its published route has two branches. You must first change the name on your birth certificate, if one is registered. If there is no registered birth certificate, you provide a name change deed on the prescribed format instead.

Note what is absent from that: a court order. Guides that tell you to obtain one, or to have an affidavit drawn up alongside a court decree, are describing something NADRA does not ask for. Our guide to changing your name on a CNIC covers both branches in full.

Fees and processing times in 2026

Any change to the details on your card, a name, a marital status, or both at once, is a modification on NADRA’s fee schedule. There is no separate marriage rate, and doing two changes in one application does not cost double.

CardNormalUrgentExecutive
CNIC Modification, non-smartPKR 400, 15 daysPKR 1,150, 12 daysPKR 2,150, 06 days
Smart NIC ModificationPKR 750, 31 daysPKR 1,500, 23 daysPKR 2,500, 09 days

The timelines are the reason to check this table against whatever else you have read. One of the pages currently ranking for this search states that Executive processing takes “1 to 2 working days” and Urgent “5 to 7 working days”. NADRA’s published figures are 06 days Executive and 12 days Urgent for a non-smart card, and 09 and 23 for a Smart card. If you are timing this around a passport application, a bank account or a property transfer, the gap between “1 to 2 days” and nine is the difference between a plan that works and one that does not.

The same page quotes fee bands of “PKR 400 to 500” and “PKR 1,000 to 1,500”. NADRA’s schedule has no bands. It has two fixed columns, and the figures are the ones in the table above. Delivery within Pakistan adds PKR 165. Our full CNIC fees guide lists every service on the schedule together.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the name change is compulsory. It is not, and NADRA has said so on the record since 2021.
  • Bringing a nikah nama instead of a marriage certificate. NADRA names the Union Council, Cantonment Board or CDA as the issuing authority.
  • Getting a court order for the name change. NADRA asks for a corrected birth certificate, or a name change deed on the prescribed format.
  • Booking Executive processing expecting it in a day or two. It is 06 days on a non-smart card and 09 on a Smart card.
  • Making two separate applications. A name change and a marital status update are one modification if you do them together.
  • Changing the name without checking your other documents. A CNIC that disagrees with your passport, degrees or bank records creates work for years.

If your card is also near expiry, handle that at the same time. A renewal is priced identically to a modification, and you can track the application online once it is submitted either way.

NADRA’s position on retaining a father’s name, the marriage certificate requirement and the name change route are quoted from the FAQ on its CNIC page, and fees and processing times from its official fee structure, both read on 27 August 2026, site version V3.1.2, last updated 07-07-2026. The 2021 policy announcement and the quotations from Tariq Malik are reported by Dawn, 17 October 2021. The competing document lists, fee bands and timelines described above were read on 27 August 2026 on pages then ranking for this search.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about this topic.

Do I have to change my name on my CNIC after marriage?

No. NADRA’s own FAQ states that a woman may voluntarily choose to retain her father’s or husband’s name on the CNIC. The old practice of requiring the husband’s name was an unofficial internal policy, not a law, and NADRA formally ended it in October 2021.

Can I keep my father’s name and add my husband’s name?

Yes. NADRA named this as one of three options when it announced the change in 2021: retain your father’s name, replace it with your husband’s, or add your husband’s name while keeping your father’s.

What document do I need to change my marital status to Married?

A marriage certificate issued by a Union Council, Cantonment Board or CDA. NADRA states this is mandatory. A nikah nama on its own is not the document it asks for, because the marriage certificate is the registered civil record issued afterwards.

Is a nikah nama enough to update my CNIC?

No. NADRA names the Union Council, Cantonment Board or CDA as the issuing authority for the marriage certificate. If your nikah was never registered with one of them, registering it is the step that comes first.

How much does it cost to update a CNIC after marriage?

It is charged as a modification: PKR 400 Normal, PKR 1,150 Urgent and PKR 2,150 Executive for a non-smart CNIC, or PKR 750, PKR 1,500 and PKR 2,500 for a Smart CNIC. Delivery within Pakistan adds PKR 165.

How long does it take?

NADRA publishes 15, 12 and 06 days for a non-smart CNIC and 31, 23 and 09 days for a Smart CNIC on Normal, Urgent and Executive processing. Claims of a one or two day Executive turnaround do not match NADRA’s schedule.

Do I need a court order to change my name after marriage?

No. NADRA’s published route is to change the name on your birth certificate first if one is registered, or otherwise to provide a name change deed on the prescribed format. A court order is not part of that.

Can I change my name and marital status in one application?

Yes. Both are modifications to the same record, so they are one application at one fee rather than two.
