NADRA
Last Updated: August 2026
The tracking page that almost every guide links to no longer exists. NADRA has folded its Pak Identity portal into its main site, and the entire id.nadra.gov.pk domain now redirects to the NADRA homepage, including the /track address. If you followed those instructions and ended up staring at a homepage wondering what you did wrong, you did nothing wrong. Here are the channels NADRA currently publishes, an honest account of the SMS code everyone quotes, and how to work out whether your card is actually late.
The old tracking URL is gone
We checked this on 28 August 2026. Requesting id.nadra.gov.pk/track does not return a tracking form, an error, or a “moved” notice. It redirects to nadra.gov.pk, the general homepage. So does every other path on that domain, including the download page for the name change form that other guides still cite.
This matters beyond the inconvenience: it means any guide still telling you to “log in at the Pak Identity portal to track your application” has not been checked recently, and you should be sceptical of the rest of its detail too.
What NADRA actually publishes today
NADRA’s own customer service page lists four channels, and it names application status explicitly for the first two.
| Channel | What NADRA says it covers |
|---|---|
| Call centre, 1777 | Open 24/7 for “information regarding identity services, application status, complaints, and general guidance” |
| IVR, the automated menu on the same number | Callers can “access information about services, track application status, and receive guidance without waiting for an operator” |
| PakID mobile app | NADRA’s official app. Its published application steps end with “track your application status in the app” |
| Email, csd@nadra.gov.pk | Queries, feedback and service-related concerns, with a documented response |
From outside Pakistan, 1777 will not connect. NADRA also publishes +92 51 111 786 100, and states the service is available 24 hours a day.
The IVR route is underrated. If you only want a status and not a conversation, the automated menu gives it without waiting in a queue for an operator, which at peak times is the difference between thirty seconds and thirty minutes.
About the 8400 SMS code
You will see 8400 quoted everywhere as the way to text your Tracking ID and get a status back. We want to be straight about this one, because we could not confirm it.
8400 does not appear anywhere on NADRA’s current website. Not on the customer service page, which is where the channels are listed, not on the fee structure, not on the CNIC page, and not in the verification services section. Many people report that it works, and it has a long history, so we are not telling you it is wrong. We are telling you it is undocumented, which is a different thing.
The practical advice that follows from that: try it if you like, it costs a text message. But if you get no reply or an error, do not assume you typed it wrong or that something is amiss with your application. Move to a channel NADRA actually publishes, which means the app, 1777, or the IVR.
One thing that is clear: send the Tracking ID, not your CNIC number. Those are different numbers and only one of them identifies an application.
What you need before you check
Your Tracking ID, which is the reference issued when your application was accepted. It is printed on the token or receipt slip from the registration centre, and appears in the confirmation if you applied through the app. It is not your CNIC number and not your token queue number for the day.
If you have lost the slip, the call centre is the route, since a human can locate the application against your identity where an automated lookup by Tracking ID cannot.
Is your card actually late?
This is the question behind most status checks, and it has a precise answer, because NADRA publishes a processing time against every priority tier. Compare your application date against the tier you paid for.
| Card | Normal | Urgent | Executive |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNIC, non-smart | 15 days | 12 days | 06 days |
| Smart CNIC | 31 days | 23 days | 09 days |
| Smart NICOP, either zone | 31 days | 23 days | 09 days |
| CRC | 7 days | Not offered | 01 day |
| FRC | Not offered | Not offered | 01 day |
Two things worth noting. A Smart CNIC on Normal processing takes 31 days, which is more than twice the non-smart card’s 15, so a card that feels overdue at three weeks may be entirely on schedule. And if you are overseas, missions quote their own timelines in weeks rather than days, and they are the figures that apply to your file. Our NICOP fees and processing time guide has what individual missions publish.
Add delivery time on top. NADRA charges PKR 165 for delivery within Pakistan, and states that delivery abroad varies from country to country, so the published processing time is when the card is ready, not when it reaches you.
What the status messages mean
NADRA does not publish a list of status values, so treat the following as the stages users commonly report rather than an official taxonomy. They do map onto the real production sequence.
- Under process. The application has been accepted and is in the queue. Most of the published timeline is spent here.
- Printed. The card has been produced. From this point the remaining wait is dispatch and delivery, not processing.
- Dispatched. It has left NADRA and is with the courier.
If a status has not moved and you are past the published timeline for your tier, that is the point to act rather than to keep refreshing.
If it is genuinely overdue
NADRA runs an online complaints system at complaints.nadra.gov.pk, which lets you register a complaint and track its progress separately from the application itself. That is a different thing from a status check, and it is the escalation route once the published timeline has passed.
Before you escalate, check one thing: whether the delay is a problem with the application rather than the queue. If any detail was recorded incorrectly at submission, the fix is an office fault correction, which NADRA provides free of charge and in the Executive category. Our CNIC fees guide covers what is free and what is not.
Common mistakes
- Using the old Pak Identity tracking URL. The domain redirects to the homepage.
- Texting your CNIC number instead of the Tracking ID. They are different numbers.
- Assuming a Smart card is late at three weeks. Normal processing for it is 31 days.
- Treating the published time as delivery time. It is production time. Delivery comes after.
- Waiting on hold when the IVR would answer. NADRA states the automated menu tracks status without an operator.
- Trusting an undocumented short code over NADRA’s own channels. If 8400 does not answer, use the app or 1777.
If you have not applied yet, see our guides to applying for a new CNIC, renewing, or replacing a lost card.
The published support channels and their descriptions are quoted from NADRA’s customer service page, and processing times from its official fee structure. The redirect behaviour of the id.nadra.gov.pk domain, the absence of any SMS short code across NADRA’s site, and the operation of complaints.nadra.gov.pk were all checked on 28 August 2026. NADRA can restore or change any of these without notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about this topic.
How do I check my CNIC application status?
Use NADRA’s PakID app, or call 1777, which NADRA lists as covering application status and is open 24 hours. The IVR on the same number tracks status without waiting for an operator. From abroad, NADRA publishes +92 51 111 786 100.
Does the id.nadra.gov.pk tracking page still work?
No. As checked on 28 August 2026, the entire id.nadra.gov.pk domain redirects to NADRA’s homepage, including the /track address. Guides still linking to it have not been rechecked.
Is 8400 the official NADRA SMS code?
It is widely used, but it does not appear anywhere on NADRA’s current website: not on the customer service page, the fee structure, the CNIC page or the verification section. Try it if you like, but if it does not reply, use the app, 1777 or the IVR instead.
What do I send to check my status?
Your Tracking ID, which is the reference issued when your application was accepted. It appears on the token or receipt slip, or in the app confirmation. It is not your CNIC number.
How do I know if my CNIC is late?
Compare your application date against the tier you paid for. A non-smart CNIC is 15, 12 and 06 days on Normal, Urgent and Executive. A Smart CNIC is 31, 23 and 09 days. Delivery time comes on top of those figures.
Why is my Smart CNIC taking so long?
Normal processing for a Smart CNIC is 31 days, more than twice the non-smart card’s 15 days. A Smart card that feels overdue at three weeks is usually still within NADRA’s published time.
What do the status messages mean?
NADRA does not publish a list of status values. Users commonly report Under Process, meaning it is in the queue, Printed, meaning the card has been produced and only dispatch remains, and Dispatched, meaning it is with the courier.
What can I do if my CNIC is overdue?
NADRA runs an online complaints system at complaints.nadra.gov.pk where you can register a complaint and track its progress. First check whether a detail was recorded incorrectly, because that is an office fault and NADRA corrects it free of charge in the Executive category.
