NADRA
Last Updated: August 2026
Here is the honest answer, which no other page on this search will give you: NADRA does not publish an SMS tracking service. The number everyone quotes is 8400, plenty of people report that it works, and it may well work for you. But it appears nowhere on NADRA’s website, so nobody can promise you it will answer. This page covers what to send if you try it, why it might not reply, and the channels NADRA actually documents for exactly this purpose.
What NADRA publishes for application status
These come from NADRA’s own customer service page, and the first two name application status explicitly.
| Channel | What NADRA says it covers |
|---|---|
| Call centre, 1777 | Open 24/7 for “information regarding identity services, application status, complaints, and general guidance” |
| IVR, the automated menu on that number | Callers can “access information about services, track application status, and receive guidance without waiting for an operator” |
| PakID app | Its published step list ends “track your application status in the app” |
| csd@nadra.gov.pk, for a documented response |
From outside Pakistan, 1777 will not connect. NADRA publishes +92 51 111 786 100 and states the service runs 24 hours a day.
The IVR is the closest thing to what people want from SMS: a status, immediately, without queuing for a person. If the appeal of texting was avoiding a phone conversation, the automated menu does the same job and is documented.
About the 8400 code
We looked for it properly before writing this. On 28 August 2026 we checked NADRA’s customer service page, which is where it lists its support channels, its fee structure, its CNIC page, its NICOP page and its verification services section. 8400 appears on none of them. Neither does any other short code.
That is not the same as saying it does not work. The code has a long history and is very widely reported. It means only this: it is undocumented, so if it fails you have no official position to appeal to, and you should not read a non-reply as a signal about your application.
If you want to try it, the one thing that genuinely matters is what you send.
- Send your Tracking ID. Not your CNIC number. These are different numbers and only one identifies an application.
- Send the number on its own, with no extra words or punctuation.
- Treat no reply as inconclusive, not as bad news, and move to a documented channel.
You will also see pages stating that the service is free, that it works on specific networks, and that your Tracking ID is exactly ten digits. We have left those claims out, because NADRA publishes none of them and we could not verify any of them.
What your Tracking ID is
The reference issued when your application was accepted. It is printed on the token or acknowledgement slip from the registration centre, and it appears in the confirmation if you applied through the PakID app.
Two things it is not: your CNIC number, and the queue token you were handed for that day’s visit. Sending either will not return a status.
If you have lost the slip, an automated lookup cannot help you, because it works from the Tracking ID alone. The call centre is the route, since a person can find the application against your identity.
If SMS does not answer
Work down this order rather than resending the text.
- The PakID app, if you applied through it. Status is built in.
- The IVR on 1777. Documented for tracking, and no queue.
- An operator on 1777, or +92 51 111 786 100 from abroad. Necessary if you have lost your Tracking ID.
- Email csd@nadra.gov.pk, which NADRA offers for a documented response.
- complaints.nadra.gov.pk, NADRA’s online complaints system, which lets you register a complaint and track its progress. This is escalation, not a status check, so use it once the published timeline has passed.
Is your application actually late?
This is usually the real question behind a status check, and it has a precise answer, because NADRA publishes a processing time for every priority tier. Compare your application date against the tier you paid for.
| Document | Normal | Urgent | Executive |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNIC, non-smart | 15 days | 12 days | 06 days |
| Smart CNIC | 31 days | 23 days | 09 days |
| Smart NICOP, either zone | 31 days | 23 days | 09 days |
| CRC | 7 days | Not offered | 01 day |
| FRC | Not offered | Not offered | 01 day |
A Smart CNIC on Normal processing takes 31 days, more than twice the non-smart card’s 15. A great many “my application is stuck” worries are simply a Smart card at three weeks, comfortably inside its published time. Delivery is separate and comes after: PKR 165 within Pakistan, and abroad NADRA states it varies from country to country.
Overseas applicants should work from the mission’s own quoted timeline rather than NADRA’s, since missions quote weeks where the schedule quotes days. Our NICOP fees guide has what individual missions publish.
Common mistakes
- Texting your CNIC number. The Tracking ID is a different number.
- Resending the same text repeatedly. If it did not answer once, move to a documented channel.
- Reading silence as a problem with your application. An undocumented service failing tells you nothing about your file.
- Queuing for an operator when the IVR would do. NADRA states the automated menu tracks status.
- Assuming a Smart CNIC is late at three weeks. Normal processing for it is 31 days.
- Treating the published time as delivery time. It is production time. Delivery follows.
For the full picture, including what the status messages mean and how to escalate, see how to check your CNIC status online. If you have not applied yet, start with applying for a new CNIC or renewing.
The published support channels and their descriptions are quoted from NADRA’s customer service page, and processing times from its official fee structure. The absence of any SMS short code across NADRA’s site, and the operation of complaints.nadra.gov.pk, were checked on 28 August 2026. NADRA can add or change any of these without notice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about this topic.
Is 8400 the official NADRA SMS tracking number?
It is widely used, but NADRA does not publish it. Checked on 28 August 2026 against its customer service page, fee structure, CNIC page, NICOP page and verification services section, no SMS short code appears on any of them. It may still work, but it is undocumented.
What should I send to track my application?
Your Tracking ID, on its own, with no extra words or punctuation. Not your CNIC number, and not the queue token you were given for the day’s visit. Those are different numbers and will not return a status.
Where do I find my Tracking ID?
On the token or acknowledgement slip issued when your application was accepted, or in the confirmation if you applied through the PakID app.
What if the SMS never replies?
Treat it as inconclusive rather than as news about your application. Move to a channel NADRA documents: the PakID app, the IVR on 1777, an operator on 1777, or csd@nadra.gov.pk.
How can I check my status without SMS?
NADRA publishes four channels: the 1777 call centre, open 24/7 and covering application status; the IVR on the same number, which tracks status without waiting for an operator; the PakID app; and email. From abroad, +92 51 111 786 100.
I lost my acknowledgement slip. Can I still check?
Not by any automated lookup, since those work from the Tracking ID alone. Call 1777, where a person can locate the application against your identity.
How do I know if my application is genuinely late?
Compare your application date against the tier you paid for. A non-smart CNIC is 15, 12 and 06 days on Normal, Urgent and Executive. A Smart CNIC is 31, 23 and 09 days. Delivery time comes on top of those figures.
Why is my Smart CNIC taking longer than expected?
Normal processing for a Smart CNIC is 31 days, more than twice the non-smart card’s 15 days. A Smart card at three weeks is usually still comfortably within NADRA’s published time.
