How to Renew Your CNIC in Pakistan (2026 Guide)

Renewing a CNIC needs one thing: your CNIC number. That is NADRA’s entire published requirement, and it is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon gathering documents nobody asked for. Two other things decide how this goes. NADRA’s rules set a deadline of one month after expiry to apply, and the card most people are pushed towards is both the more expensive and the slower of the two on offer.

What you actually need

NADRA’s renewal page lists the requirement for a CNIC renewal as, in full, the CNIC number. Nothing else. NADRA already holds your biometrics, your photograph and your family record, so a renewal is a re-issue rather than a fresh registration.

You may still be asked to attend in person. NADRA’s own process steps end with visiting a registration centre if required, and it states that biometric verification and photograph may require a visit. Photograph capture is mandatory and cannot be waived. But you do not need to arrive carrying a birth certificate and your parents’ cards, which is what a first application requires.

There is a more encouraging statement on the other side of this, from NADRA’s own PakID page, and it applies specifically to renewals and reprints: you can renew or request a reprint of an existing CNIC or NICOP “without visiting a NADRA centre”. NADRA’s renewal guideline for the app shows the route, and the steps are set out below. After you choose Renew and reach the Verify Applicant Facial step, an application for your own card goes straight to the delivery address screen. The photograph and the fingerprint scan through the phone camera appear when you apply for a blood relative, and NADRA says that fingerprint step is not mandatory if facial recognition succeeds. The one month rule

NADRA quotes Rule 12 of the NADRA (NIC) Rules 2002 on its renewal page: a citizen shall at any time, but not later than one month after the date of expiry or early termination of the validity period, apply for renewal of their card.

So you can renew as early as you like, there is no minimum waiting period, and there is a stated obligation to apply within a month of the card lapsing. If your card expired some time ago, apply now rather than waiting for a reason to.

What an expired CNIC actually stops

Guides list banking, pensions, property and travel as though each one switches off on the expiry date. Two of those are worth checking against what the regulators publish, because the published rules are narrower than the warnings, and one of them points the other way.

Your bank account. The State Bank’s AML, CFT and CPF Regulations for its regulated entities say, in the notes to the customer due diligence requirements, that an account may be opened on an expired CNIC, on attested copies of the NADRA receipt or token and the expired card, provided the bank obtains a copy of the renewed CNIC within three months. For a card that expires while you are already a customer, the duty falls on the bank: it must run systems that raise an alert at least one month before the expiry date, and must keep taking reasonable measures to obtain the renewed CNIC, and it may rely on a NADRA Verisys report instead of a copy. The regulation does not say the account is frozen. A bank that restricts one is applying its own policy rather than a published State Bank rule, so ask it to put the reason in writing.

Your SIM. This is where an expired card bites hardest. PTA requires a valid CNIC, with a fingerprint matched against NADRA, for every one of the six SIM transactions it lists: buying or activating a SIM, getting a duplicate, changing ownership, porting your number, re-verifying a SIM, and disowning one. An expired card stops all six. PTA also makes an allowance worth knowing: old age individuals and persons with amputation whose biometric verification is not possible can obtain SIMs from Customer Service Centres and selected franchisees after verification by administrative means.

What PTA does not publish is the claim repeated most often: that SIMs already registered on an expired CNIC are blocked. Pakistani technology press reported in September 2024 that PTA had begun exactly that, in phases, starting with cards that expired before 2017, and that service is restored once the holder renews the card and verifies biometrically. We could not find it on PTA’s own site, so treat it as reported rather than published: a reason to renew, not a settled fact about your number.

The honest summary is that an expired CNIC does not flip a switch. It closes the transactions that need a valid card at a counter, it gives every other organisation a reason to ask questions, and it leaves you outside a rule NADRA does publish. None of that improves with time, and the renewal fee is the same whenever you go.

The choice that costs most people money and time

Read that carefully, because it inverts the usual assumption. NADRA still lists both cards, and the non-smart CNIC is cheaper at every tier and faster at every tier. On Normal processing it is 15 days against 31, less than half the wait, for PKR 350 less.

One caution on that choice. NADRA’s previous Registration Policy stated that “reversion from SMART card to Teslin is not allowed”. The current version, RP-6.0.2, no longer includes that line, so if you already hold a Smart card, ask at the counter before counting on the cheaper non-smart row. NADRA has also introduced a CNIC with a QR code, and has published no fee for it.

Guides that tell you to pay more for the Smart card “despite the higher fee” leave out that you are also waiting twice as long. What the extra PKR 350 buys is the chip, extra security features and a more durable card. NADRA itself says the chip’s functions could not be used as intended because chip readers and the supporting infrastructure were not available, and its newer QR code card drops the chip altogether. Renewing through the PakID app

PakID is NADRA’s official mobile application for identity registration and tracking. Its published steps are:

1. Download the PakID mobile app.
2. Create your account, or sign in.
3. Select the CNIC application option.
4. Fill in your personal details.
5. Upload the required documents.
6. Visit a NADRA Registration Centre if required.
7. Track your application status in the app.

Step six is the one to plan around. NADRA states that biometric verification and photograph may require a visit to a registration centre, so treat the app as a way to do the paperwork in advance rather than a guarantee of avoiding the counter entirely.

NADRA’s Renewal user guideline (14 November 2025, on its Downloads page) shows the screens behind those steps:

1. Start. On the home screen tap ID Card under ID Documents, then choose Myself or My Blood Relatives (parents, siblings, spouse or minors), entering their citizen number in the second case.
2. Choose Renew. The options shown depend on your card, and include Update Card and Conversion alongside Renew.
3. Verify the applicant. Tap Verify Applicant Facial. For your own card the delivery address screen follows directly. For a blood relative the app takes a photograph and then offers a fingerprint scan, which NADRA says is not mandatory if facial recognition succeeds.
4. Choose delivery and speed. Pick a temporary, permanent or other address, or a NADRA centre to collect the card from, then Normal, Urgent or Executive. NADRA says Normal and Urgent can be upgraded to Executive later. The example screens are headed Smart ID Card Renewal and show, on Normal, an application fee of PKR 750, a delivery fee of PKR 165 and PKR 915 payable.
5. Upload documents. Select the documents the app asks for from your device.
6. Submit and wait. The app confirms the submission and shows a tracking ID. After background verification and approval it tells you to pay, so payment comes after approval and not at submission. NADRA says a representative may contact you for further verification.

Those example screens are the Smart ID renewal. They do not show a choice of the cheaper non-smart card, so if that is the card you want, ask NADRA before relying on the app. Once the application is in, our guide to checking your CNIC status covers tracking it in the app.

Renewing in person

NADRA does not publish a step list for the in-person route, so here is only what it does confirm, rather than a walkthrough invented for the sake of one. You need your CNIC number. Photograph capture is mandatory and cannot be waived for any reason. Biometric verification may be taken again. You pay the fee for the tier you have chosen, and this matters for timing: NADRA’s processing clock starts when that payment clears, not when you join the queue.

If you cannot get to a centre

NADRA will come to you, free of charge. Its Special Assistance Service, also called the Biker Service, delivers registration at the doorstep at no additional cost, and CNIC renewal is explicitly on its list of covered services. The published groups it serves are elderly citizens unable to travel, bedridden patients, hospitalised individuals, persons with disabilities facing mobility challenges, prisoners, and orphan children in registered orphanages.

Request it on 1777 from a mobile, on 051-111-786-100 from a landline or from abroad, or by written application at any NADRA Zonal or Regional Office. Where the doorstep service does not reach, Mobile Registration Vans cover remote and underserved areas at the standard fee with no extra charge for the van, on a first come first served basis. There is a third route that is often nearer than a centre. Since January 2026 NADRA has offered CNIC renewal at selected e-Sahulat franchises, at NADRA’s prescribed fees plus a PKR 100 service charge payable to e-Sahulat. Renewing while abroad

If you have moved overseas, the CNIC may no longer be the document you want. A NICOP is issued to Pakistani citizens residing abroad and is what gives visa-free entry to Pakistan while it is valid. It is priced in dollars rather than rupees, at USD 39 in Zone A and USD 20 in Zone B. The comparison is set out in NICOP versus CNIC.

If NADRA refuses the renewal

Renewals have been refused where the holder cannot produce documentary proof of residence in Pakistan before 1978, or proof of their parents’ Pakistani citizenship. For older applicants whose parents died decades ago, those papers may simply not exist. A private member’s bill introduced in the National Assembly on 13 January 2026 proposes barring refusals on that ground alone for citizens aged 60 and above who previously held a valid CNIC. It has been introduced, not passed, so it changes nothing yet.

Separately, a CNIC is not cancelled merely because the holder faces criminal proceedings. NADRA states a card is not cancelled solely due to criminal status, though it may be digitally impounded on the direction of a competent court. If you have been told otherwise at a counter, ask for the specific ground in writing and escalate to a Zonal or Regional Office.

Mistakes worth avoiding

• Assembling a full document pack. Renewal needs your CNIC number. Bring identification, but you are not re-registering.
• Choosing Smart for speed. It is the slower card at every tier: 31 days against 15 on Normal.
• Waiting until the card is nearly expired. You may renew at any time, and the rules require applying within one month after expiry.
• Taking a frail relative to a centre. The doorstep service covers renewals and costs nothing extra.
• Letting an expired card sit. It stops every SIM transaction, gives every counter a reason to query you, and leaves you outside NADRA’s one month rule.
• Accepting a refusal at the counter. Ask for the ground in writing and escalate.
