How to Renew Your CNIC in Pakistan (2026 Guide)

Renewing a CNIC needs one thing: your CNIC number. That is NADRA’s entire published requirement, and it is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon gathering documents nobody asked for. Two other things decide how this goes. NADRA’s rules set a deadline of one month after expiry to apply, and the card most people are pushed towards is both the more expensive and the slower of the two on offer.

What you actually need

NADRA’s renewal page lists the requirement for a CNIC renewal as, in full, the CNIC number. Nothing else. NADRA already holds your biometrics, your photograph and your family record, so a renewal is a re-issue rather than a fresh registration.

You may still be asked to attend in person. NADRA’s own process steps end with visiting a registration centre if required, and it states that biometric verification and photograph may require a visit. Photograph capture is mandatory and cannot be waived. But you do not need to arrive carrying a birth certificate and your parents’ cards, which is what a first application requires.

There is a more encouraging statement on the other side of this, from NADRA’s own PakID page, and it applies specifically to renewals and reprints: you can renew or request a reprint of an existing CNIC or NICOP “without visiting a NADRA centre”. The app scans your fingerprint through the phone camera and checks it against biometrics NADRA already holds. That is the practical difference between renewing and registering for the first time. The one month rule

NADRA quotes Rule 12 of the NADRA (NIC) Rules 2002 on its renewal page: a citizen shall at any time, but not later than one month after the date of expiry or early termination of the validity period, apply for renewal of their card.

So you can renew as early as you like, there is no minimum waiting period, and there is a stated obligation to apply within a month of the card lapsing. If your card expired some time ago, apply now rather than waiting for a reason to.

The choice that costs most people money and time

Read that carefully, because it inverts the usual assumption. NADRA still lists both cards, and the non-smart CNIC is cheaper at every tier and faster at every tier. On Normal processing it is 15 days against 31, less than half the wait, for PKR 350 less.

One important limit on that choice. NADRA’s Registration Policy states that “reversion from SMART card to Teslin is not allowed”, so the cheaper non-smart line is only open to you if you are not already holding a Smart card. If you are, the Smart row is your row and the saving is not available.

Guides that tell you to pay more for the Smart card “despite the higher fee” leave out that you are also waiting twice as long. What the extra PKR 350 buys is the chip: machine-readable verification at borders, banks and government counters. That is a real benefit and for many people it is worth it. Renewing through the PakID app

PakID is NADRA’s official mobile application for identity registration and tracking. Its published steps are:

1. Download the PakID mobile app.
2. Create your account, or sign in.
3. Select the CNIC application option.
4. Fill in your personal details.
5. Upload the required documents.
6. Visit a NADRA Registration Centre if required.
7. Track your application status in the app.

Step six is the one to plan around. NADRA states that biometric verification and photograph may require a visit to a registration centre, so treat the app as a way to do the paperwork in advance rather than a guarantee of avoiding the counter entirely.

Renewing in person

NADRA does not publish a step list for the in-person route, so here is only what it does confirm, rather than a walkthrough invented for the sake of one. You need your CNIC number. Photograph capture is mandatory and cannot be waived for any reason. Biometric verification may be taken again. You pay the fee for the tier you have chosen, and this matters for timing: NADRA’s processing clock starts when that payment clears, not when you join the queue.

If you cannot get to a centre

NADRA will come to you, free of charge. Its Special Assistance Service, also called the Biker Service, delivers registration at the doorstep at no additional cost, and CNIC renewal is explicitly on its list of covered services. The published groups it serves are elderly citizens unable to travel, bedridden patients, hospitalised individuals, persons with disabilities facing mobility challenges, prisoners, and orphan children in registered orphanages.

Request it on 1777 from a mobile, on 051-111-786-100 from a landline or from abroad, or by written application at any NADRA Zonal or Regional Office. Where the doorstep service does not reach, Mobile Registration Vans cover remote and underserved areas at the standard fee with no extra charge for the van, on a first come first served basis. Renewing while abroad

If you have moved overseas, the CNIC may no longer be the document you want. A NICOP is issued to Pakistani citizens residing abroad and is what gives visa-free entry to Pakistan. If NADRA refuses the renewal

Renewals have been refused where the holder cannot produce documentary proof of residence in Pakistan before 1978, or proof of their parents’ Pakistani citizenship. For older applicants whose parents died decades ago, those papers may simply not exist. A private member’s bill introduced in the National Assembly on 13 January 2026 proposes barring refusals on that ground alone for citizens aged 60 and above who previously held a valid CNIC. It has been introduced, not passed, so it changes nothing yet.

Separately, a CNIC is not cancelled merely because the holder faces criminal proceedings. NADRA states a card is not cancelled solely due to criminal status, though it may be digitally impounded on the direction of a competent court. If you have been told otherwise at a counter, ask for the specific ground in writing and escalate to a Zonal or Regional Office.

Mistakes worth avoiding

• Assembling a full document pack. Renewal needs your CNIC number. Bring identification, but you are not re-registering.
• Choosing Smart for speed. It is the slower card at every tier: 31 days against 15 on Normal.
• Waiting until the card is nearly expired. You may renew at any time, and the rules require applying within one month after expiry.
• Taking a frail relative to a centre. The doorstep service covers renewals and costs nothing extra.
• Letting an expired card sit. It blocks banking, property transactions, pensions and travel.
• Accepting a refusal at the counter. Ask for the ground in writing and escalate.
